George L. Cook, retired scene shop supervisor

George L. Cook, 64, died July 31.

Cook was the scene shop supervisor for the Department of Dance and Theatre for 10 years. He retired in 2011.

He spent much of his career behind the scenes of productions in Austin and North Texas, from building sets for movies such as “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” and “Silkwood” and serving on the staff of the TV show “Austin City Limits” to working as a stagehand for concerts in Austin and Dallas and helping on productions at UNT and the University of Texas at Austin. He had been scene shop supervisor at UT from 1981 to 1985, and had worked in its Performing Arts Center in 1981.

He was a member for more than 30 years of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local No. 205.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah Hyman Cook.
