Fun Fact: Which Mean Green opponent plays in a pit?

Karen Aston, women's basketball coach, 2011The Mean Green women’s basketball team plays its first home game Nov. 14 in the Super Pit versus the University of New Mexico. What do the two teams have in common?

A. Both have school colors of green and white.

B. UNT and UNM have eagle mascots.

C. The teams play in a Super Pit.

D. Both have new coaches.

The correct answer is C and D. Both teams have new coaches and both play in a Super Pit.

Mean Green Head Coach Karen Aston, above, joined UNT in March. She previously was head coach at UNC-Charlotte where her record-setting teams qualified for post-season play, including the NCAA tournament. She also coached at women’s powers Baylor University and the University of Texas, and was an assistant coach at UNT 1996-98.

Aston’s counterpart, Yvonne Sanchez, is beginning her first year as head coach at New Mexico, where basketball teams play in The Pit. The Pit in Albuquerque was built in 1966 and has been described as the most famous hole in the ground in New Mexico since Carlsbad Caverns.

The UNT Coliseum, also a bowl built into the ground, was nicknamed the Super Pit when it replaced the Snake Pit, now the Bahnsen Gym.

Aston says the Mean Green women are learning her preferred fast break, up-tempo style, and that she and the team are eager to begin the season.

The 2011-12 opening game will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 11 at the University of Texas at Arlington, then the Mean Green women play three home games.

  • Buy tickets  to home games Nov. 14 versus New Mexico, Nov. 16 versus Oral Roberts and Nov. 22 versus SMU. All begin at 7 p.m.

The Mean Green men’s team, 22-11 last year, begins the season with home games at 7 p.m. Nov. 9 and Nov. 11, and then plays Texas Tech at Lubbock at 7 p.m. Nov. 16. The men gained national attention in 2010 when they defeated Texas Tech 92-83 at the Super Pit.
