Fun Fact: When did softball come to UNT?

A. 1998, when Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa broke Roger Maris' major league home run record.

B. 2002, when Tiger Woods won the PGA Master's Tournament for the second consecutive year.

C. 2004, when the Seattle Storm defeated the Connecticut Sun to win the WNBA championship.

D. 2006, when the Rangers' Michael Young won the All Star Game with a ninth inning triple.

The correct answer is C. The current softball program began in 2004.  Infielder Lisa Johnson, above.

The team is mid-way through the season and has a 6-5-1 Sun Belt Conference record. Home games - be sure to wear green - are scheduled April 6, 7, 11, 21, 22 and May 2 and 5

Kay JohnsonThe fifth annual Play for Kay Day game will be at 4 p.m. May 2 at Lovelace Stadium versus Stephen F. Austin.

All proceeds will benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and will honor Kay Johnson, right, “our most loyal supporter and long-time friend and co-worker,” said Head Coach T.J. Hubbard.

Johnson is a student insurance coordinator in the Mean Green Athletics Department.

Admission May 2 is free, with donations accepted at the gate. The softball team has raised $3,600 for DFW’s Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in the last four years. 

Hubbard joined the Mean Green as an assistant coach for the 2004 season, and became head coach in 2007. Under his leadership, 11 players have been named all-conference, six hve been named to the Sun Belt Conference all-tournament team and more than 11 have been named conference player of the week.

Hubbard earned his 100th career win in 2011, as the Mean Green set a school record for 17 home wins. The team also defeated three nationally-ranked teams, Baylor, Missouri and Louisana-Lafayette.

The 2012 conference tournament will be May 9-12 in Boca Raton, Fla.
