Fun Fact: Stock up on cold weather gear

Snowstorm, February 2010Which one of these winter weather Green Pride items is not for sale at the UNT Bookstore at the University Union?

A. $5 ice scraper

B. $20 knit hat

C. $26 scarf

D. $62 blanket

The correct answer is A: The UNT Bookstore does not sell an ice scraper, but it does stock jackets, gloves, knitwear, blankets and other UNT branded items to keep you cozy during periodic days of cold weather.

You might need some warm attire in February, which seems to be the month for inclement weather. A snow storm closed the university for one day in 2010, above, and the campus shut down for five days Feb. 1-4 and Feb. 9, 2011 due to record-setting icy conditions in North Texas.

So be prepared. And save money. Shop for warm Green Pride gear at the UNT Bookstore on Dec. 7, 8 and 9. when the store offers a 20 percent discount to faculty and staff in conjunction with the annual holiday party. Bring your UNT ID and the flyer attachment below to receive the discount. (Sorry, software and textbooks not included.)

On Dec. 8, stop by the Old Fashioned Holiday Experience from 2 to 4 p.m.  in the University Union, Silver Eagle Suite. Feast on food, sip drinks and enter prize drawings every 15 minutes.

Here are some other ways to prepare for wintry weather:

  • Update your phone and email information at so you can receive Eagle Alert messages in case inclement weather shuts down the school. The Eagle Alert system will notify faculty, staff and students via voice mail, email and text message. Check InHouse and for news and information, too.
  • Sign up for the city of Denton Code Red system, which also sends notices about inclement weather.
  • Keep track of the North Texas forecast from the National Weather Service.

Enter to win an eco-friendly shopping bag - perfect for carrying the Green Pride gear you'll buy at the bookstore - by sending an email to InHouse with “Green Pride” in the subject line by 5 p.m. Dec. 9. Winners will be selected at random from all responses.
