Fun Fact: Mean Green celebrate a century of football

All Century Football Team 1913-2013 logoUNT celebrates 100 years of football in 2013. The Mean Green played a nearby college in 1913, the first official year of intercollegiate athletics. Which school was the opponent?

A. Sam Houston Normal

B. Tyler Junior College

C. East Texas Normal

D. Texas Christian University

The correct answer is D: TCU. The Horned Frogs defeated North Texas Normal 13-0 in the one game of the 1913 season.

In subsequent years, UNT played other Texas and Oklahoma schools, including Sam Houston Normal, East Texas Normal, Austin College and Durant Normal.

In 1915, J.W. Sinclair became the first full-time coach and Theron J. Fouts - the namesake of Fouts Field - became football coach in 1920. Fouts later was director of athletics and dean of men.

The university’s first athletic conference affiliation was in 1921, when it joined the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Mean Green Athletics will celebrate a century of football with an All-Century Football Team, choosing representatives from a 120-player ballot selected by a committee of former players and athletics staff.

A public vote will be included in the selection.

The All-Century team will be announced at the Green and White Spring Football Game, 2 p.m. April 13 at Apogee Stadium. The day also will include a fun run and induction ceremony for new members of the athletic hall of fame.

Now, get ready for the next century with green gear. Enter to win a UNT spirit pack (T-shirt, water bottle, lapel pin and eco-friendly shopping bag) by sending an email to InHouse with “All Century Team” in the subject line by 5 p.m. March 8. Winners will be selected at random from all responses.

UNT will join Conference USA beginning with the 2013-14 academic year, bringing in-state rivalries, opponents within driving distance and more national media exposure.

The first game will be Aug. 31 versus Idaho at Apogee Stadium, a home opener for the first time since 2001. There will be eight C-USA games, including three home games against Texas schools – Rice University, The University of Texas at El Paso and The University of Texas at San Antonio.

The first Conference USA game will be Oct. 5 in New Orleans versus Tulane.
