Fun fact: Honors Day tradition runs deep

2014 honors day

Since 1950, Honors Day has been a UNT tradition that celebrates students’ academic achievements and leadership. What group started the annual event?

·        A: The athletics department
·        B: The Geezle Fraternity
·        C: The Blue Key Honor Society
·        D: The Meritum chapter of the Mortar Board Honor Society

The answer is D. The Meritum chapter of the Mortar Board Honor Society held the first academic convocation. Later, the Blue Key Honor Society added a banquet for the honorees. The university began hosting the annual event in 1972.

Honors Day 2015 is planned for 3 p.m. April 10 in the Murchison Performing Arts Center.

Those who attend will enjoy music performed by students and faculty in the UNT College of Music and a speech by senior Andres A. Zorrilla, a business marketing major who is concentrating on professional selling. He is president of the North Texas Forty, an organization that promotes leadership development, and he has also been involved with the Student Government Association, the Theta Chi fraternity, Alpha Lambda Delta and the Honors College.

The event also features the presentation of the annual ‘Fessor Graham Award for teaching excellence.

Named after late Floyd Graham, a member of the music faculty for more than 40 years, the student body chooses the winner each year for outstanding and selfless service to students. Graham received the first award in 1958, and students have honored a faculty member annually since then.

After celebrating the accomplishments of UNT’s brightest students and dedicated staff and faculty members, university leaders will serve cake and punch on the lawn outside the Murchison.
