Fun Fact: Enter to win the 2010 CD

Lab 2010 jazz CDJazz Studies student Josh Dresser wrote a great arrangement of Dave Holland's renowned piece Prime Directive which is recorded on the One O'Clock Lab Band's newest CD, Lab 2010. That same title refers to the guiding principle of which famous sci-fi mega-franchise?

A. Star Wars

B. Scooby Doo

C. Space Ghost

D. Star Trek

The correct answer is D: Star Trek. In the world of Star Trek, the Prime Directive, Starfleet's General Order #1, is the ultimate guiding principle of the United Federation of Planets. The Prime Directive states that there can be no interference with the internal development of pre-warp civilizations, consistent with the historical real world concept of Westphalian sovereignty.

Steve WiestGot that? To learn more, ask this week’s Fun Fact guest author Steve Wiest, right, an avid Star Trek fan, who also is director of the One O’Clock Lab Band.

Enter to win a CD of Lab 2010 by sending an e-mail to inhouse@unt.edu with “Prime Directive” in the subject line by 5 p.m. Sept. 10. Winners will be selected at random from all responses.

The new CD follows last year’s double Grammy-nominated recording, and, said Wiest, “I think you will find that Lab 2010 incorporates everything that is so amazing about the One O’Clock tradition: cutting edge modern large jazz ensemble compositions and arrangements by our talented students, charts by our Grammy-nominated faculty and straight ahead modern classics by the giants of jazz.”

The CD includes student arrangements and  Grammy-nominated original compositions by former director Neil Slater, and by Wiest, New Cydonia, a follow-up to Wiest's 2009 Grammy-nominated Ice-Nine.
