Former Technology Innovation Program manager joins research office

Felix Wu, Director of Research DevelopmentFelix Wu, left, will serve as Senior Director of Research Development for the Office of Research and Economic and Development effective Aug. 6. Research Development oversees a range of grant-related services aimed to expand research growth and external funding.

Wu will join Denise Simmons, assistant vice president of research development, and other team members in to work with faculty researchers from all disciplines to maximize the competitiveness of their funding proposals.

Wu joins UNT from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, where he worked for more than 15 years as Senior Program Manager of the Technology Innovation Program, managing interdisciplinary engineering research projects within the federal government and with various industries and universities.

In addition to his leadership in university-industry research administration, Wu has worked for more than 14 years as a mechanical engineer and materials scientist with industry research and development, including Owens Corning Science and Technology Center and Alcoa Technical Center, and as an adjunct professor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He obtained his doctorate in mechanical engineering from Cornell University and brings extensive expertise in high-performance fibers, polymers, composites, manufacturing, nanomaterials/structures, high-temperature applications, biomaterials and biomedical devices, and civil infrastructure.

Wu is an active member of various professional organizations and has served as a review panelist, committee member, keynote speaker, plenary speaker and chair, and conference chair for numerous international symposia and workshops.  Affiliations include the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering, Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers, and the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society.

Wu’s background both as a researcher and as a program manager of research projects will be an asset to our faculty and the infrastructure of this office.”
