Former students put their stamp on metroplex culture

Chris FlemmonsSinger and songwriter Chris Flemmons felt Denton was “just oozing with creative energy” – and he wanted to create something that would highlight the independent music scene and boost the Denton economy.

The result was 35 Denton, a music festival that has won national and international attention, including from the The New York Times.

Flemmons is one of several alumni who are helping to shape the cultural face of the Dallas-Fort Worth by operating galleries and museums, leading dance troupes and managing theatre companies – and they are featured in the Summer 2012 issue of The North Texan, the university’s 180,000-circulation quarterly publication.

The article also features:

  • Cohn Drennan, who has given an open door to UNT graduates and other artists as the owner of Cohn Drennan Contemporary art gallery in Dallas.
  • Debbie Brooks, who contracts orchestras for hundreds of events a year as director of DFW Musicians Services.
  • Katricia Eaglin, who performs with the Dallas Black Dance Theatre, as well as serves as assistant rehearsal director, teaching choreography and reconstructing dances.
  • Mike Barrow, who serves as managing director of the Denton Community Theatre, providing his business expertise and theatrical training.
  • Andrea Karnes, who organizes exhibitions for contemporary artwork as curator for the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.

The summer edition of The North Texan also includes articles, photos and links to videos:

  • Learn how faculty members guide students to win nationally competitive scholarships.
  • Meet alumni John Norris, one of the executive producers for the Oscar-winning movie The Help, and Dana Tanamachi, whose chalkboard lettering has been featured in O, The Oprah Magazine.
  • Learn about the UNT Alumni Association and how to join.
