Fashion design seniors set to stun in exhibition

Intricate and glamourous outfits will cascade down the runway at this year’s ArtWear, an annual juried fashion show featuring professional-level work done by graduating seniors in the College of Visual Arts and Design’s fashion design program at UNT. Fashion designs by UNT graduating senior Johanna Thornton

The 36 student designers in the production will show off their fashion creations at 6 p.m. May 7 in UNT’s University Union Ballroom 314, 1155 Union Circle, Denton.

“ArtWear 2016 will be a great representation of what UNT has in store for the fashion world,” said Robbie Richard, producer of this year’s ArtWear show and president of the Marek+Richard clothing company. “The students are what the future of fashion is. It’s not about the brands that currently exist, but the brands that these students are going to form.”

Richard also teaches a fashion show production class at UNT in which students learn and participate in the production of Artwear. He said the class is set up like an actual production company, with different departments like budgeting, marketing and merchandising, so that students gain real work experience by the end of the semester.

“UNT has a very rigorous program with an emphasis on the importance of dedication and hard work,” Richard said. “The students put in lots of long hours and sleepless nights. It’s really a skill-based education, so the students learn a broad spectrum of skills that pertain to all aspects of the fashion industry.”

ArtWear has been going on for more than 30 years and has debuted many successful young designers who have gone on to work for companies such as Calvin Klein, Liz Claiborne, Fossil, Theory, Nicole Miller, Betsy Johnson, Ralph Lauren, Perry Ellis, Monique Lhuillier, Dillard's, Haggar and JCPenney. Recognized alumni of the program include Michael Faircloth, Nicolas Villalba, Finley Moll, Shirin Askari, Khanh Nguyen and Lucy Dang, who are all successful independent fashion designers.
