Facilities installing more light poles on campus

Campus Night

UNT Facilities is lighting up more campus pedestrian areas and parking lots. Thirty-six new pedestrian walkway lights will be added over the next eight weeks to the university's current lighting network of 1,400 light poles. UNT community members can already see construction underway to erect light poles along North Texas Boulevard, south of Willis Library and Avenue C in two areas. Light poles also are going up near EESAT, Chilton Hall, Sage Hall and Apogee Stadium.

The additional lighting for UNT's 900-acre campus is a welcomed upgrade.

"With a campus the size of UNT, lighting is important for walking from building to building during hours of darkness, said Kim Nguyen, the project's designer and manager of campus planning for UNT Facilities.

Campus safety statistics are positive and consistent with the robust and growing lighting network that the UNT community needs.  More than 340 lights have been added in the last five years along campus sidewalks and courtyards, Nguyen said.

“Safety is always a priority," he said. "We want to be proactive in making the campus a safe environment.”

Students, faculty, and staff can assist UNT Facilities in keeping campus lights operating by reporting inoperative exterior lights to Facilities Work Control at 940-565-2700 or emailing a service request to
