Facilities get makeovers, new building projects near completion

Football stadium constructionConstruction and renovation projects welcomed the university community to campus for the 2010-11 academic year.

Two academic buildings, the completed Life Sciences Complex and the under-construction Business Leadership Building, have been most visible on campus. But other projects have helped improve the academic and workplace environment for faculty, staff and students. Facilities that have had makeovers include:

  • Department of Radio, Television and Film theatre
  • Art Building restrooms and offices
  • College of Music Concert Hall
  • Multicultural Center

A project to add a new library book drop-off location on Highland Street across from Crumley Hall is in the planning stage.

Other university projects are moving along as scheduled, said Charles Jackson, acting senior associate vice president for administration. Work will resume on the 87,000-square-foot Life Sciences Complex to complete several research labs in unfinished spaces.

Also on schedule is the Football Stadium at Mean Green Village, right, that will open with a capacity of 30,000 fans for the 2011 season.

The 180,000-square-foot Business Leadership Building is slated to open in summer 2011, along with a new 1,000-car parking garage at the corner of Highland and Avenue A.

Other on-campus projects include:

  • Fifty pedestrian light poles around the General Academic Building and Business Administration Building for safety and security.
  • Rebuilt sidewalks around the Music Building to make them handicap accessible and in compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act design standards.
  • Renovated locker rooms in the Physical Education Building and conversion of former locker room space into labs for the Department of Kinesiology, Health Promotion and Recreation.

Advising suites were completed for the College of Engineering and the College of Information.

Also in full swing are construction projects that will help further research efforts at Discovery Park, Jackson said. The UNT System Board of Regents approved plans for construction there atĀ its Aug. 19 meeting.

There also are plans to add an additional lab for the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. And, starting this fall, the Center for Advanced Research and Technology in Discovery Park will begin construction on a clean room, new offices and labs, Jackson said.
