Expanding student mentoring with Undergraduate Research Fellowships

Feb. 4, 2016

Dear faculty and staff,

We always are looking for ways to expand our student research efforts and academic excellence in every discipline.

Therefore, several university divisions have pledged $125,000 to create Undergraduate Research Fellowships. These $500 fellowships will reward up to 250 students who show promise of contributing to our research and creativity environments.

We’ve also added an incentive for colleges that encourage their students to apply. The college with the highest percentage of its students to receive the fellowship will receive $10,000 to fund another 20 fellowships.

Students in all disciplines, including the arts and humanities, are eligible.

Leaders in the Honors College and the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science will evaluate the Undergraduate Research Fellowships submissions. However, because different disciplines define research and creative expression in varied ways, colleges and individual departments will set the criteria for admission into research/creativity environments.

TAMS and the Honors College will encourage colleges to:

  • Post departmental descriptions of faculty research
  • Provide information about students who are seeking placement in varied research settings

We look forward to seeing more students use their superb classroom experience in concert with their fellowships to enhance the learning environment.

UNT Proud,

Neal Smatresk, President

Finley Graves, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Tom McCoy, Vice President for Research and Economic Development
