Denton ISD students' art comes to UNT

Their work will be featured in On the Square, Outside the Box: Denton ISD's District Art Show May 20May 26 at the gallery in Denton’s historic downtown square.

The free exhibition includes all forms of 2D and 3D media, including drawing, painting, sculpture and photography, from students from kindergarten to the 12th grade. Two pieces of artwork from each of the 34 campuses – chosen by teachers – are displayed.

“The students are so excited to be involved in UNT because it’s a big name and it’s on the square,” said Kelley McGee, the show's coordinator and the art teacher at Adkins Elementary School. “They also feel so honored because they’ve been selected.”

A reception will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. May 20, and McGee noted the receptions have brought in a great turnout from families and teachers who can see their former students.

“We get to see the progression of the students’ work,” McGee said.

The exhibition began three years ago after a discussion among DISD art teachers in which they were trying to find ways to grow the department. UNT on the Square agreed to host the event.

“We are grateful to be involved with UNT and are thankful that UNT on the Square allows us to be on their schedule,” McGee said.
