Coaches hit the road to promote Mean Green sports

Head Coach Dan McCarney, spring football 2012Athletics staff and head coaches will meet with fans and friends of Mean Green sports for the second Coaches Caravan May 8, May 10, May 15 and May 16 in four Metroplex cities.

Last year’s caravan allowed fans of all types – alumni, faculty, staff, students, donors and anyone who enjoys collegiate sports – to learn about the inaugural season of Apogee Stadium. This year’s caravan also brings news of another major development in Mean Green athletics.

Athletics Director Rick Villarreal and UNT officials announced May 4 that the university will join Conference USA beginning in 2013. Membership in Conference USA, map below, brings with it more national media exposure, more name recognition, a higher level of competition, regional rivalries and a better reflection of UNT’s academic quality, said President V. Lane Rawlins.

Head football coach Dan McCarney, above during spring practice, will discuss the fall season, which follows a 5-7 record in 2011  - the most wins by a first year coach since 1973. Season attendance was 113,186, the largest in UNT football history.

The 2012 season has five home games, including Family Weekend Sept. 22, Homecoming Nov. 3 and UNT Preview Nov. 10.

Enter to win a water bottle and "A green light to greatness." T-shirt by sending an email to InHouse with "Coaches' Caravan" in the subject line by 5 p.m. May 11. Winners will be selected at random from all responses.

New men's basketball coach Tony Benford and new women's basketball coach Mike Petersen also will be at each caravan stop.

Other coaches will attend, if schedules allow. The men’s golf team and women’s tennis teams are preparing for NCAA national tournaments, and the softball team and track and field teams are participating in Sun Belt Conference tournaments. Soccer - 2011 conference regular season champs - and volleyball teams play in the fall.

The Mean Green Club Coaches Caravans are free, family-friendly, open to the public and include refreshments. The Mean Green Club, which sponsors the events, is the university's sports advocacy and fundraising organization.

Each tour stop will feature special guests including Scrappy, and members of the cheer and dance teams. All will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on these dates and locations:
