Civil war survivor to speak at fundraiser for Ugandan schools

Invisible ChildrenAs part of the Invisible Children Face-to-Face Tour, Francis Ojok, a student at Gulu University in northern Uganda, and a survivor of the country’s decades-long conflict with Lord’s Resistance Army rebels, will share his story at 8 p.m. Oct. 7 in the University Union, Lyceum.

The free event also will include a showing of the documentary film, Go, which illustrates how education is transforming the lives of Ugandan students affected by civil war.

The tour is part of the Schools for Schools program, which raises money to rebuild schools in northern Uganda.

Eleven top students from the Invisible Children's Legacy Scholarship Program are touring North America to share how the Schools for Schools program has been rebuilding education in a region recovering from more than 20 years of war.

Invisible Children represent Ugandan children who are abducted by the rebel army and forced to work as child soldiers.

The UNT Invisible Children Club, a student organization formed in May, also will be participating in a nationwide competition in which clusters of high schools, academies and universities compete to raise money for 11 schools in northern Uganda. The UNT club will host an afterparty at 10 p.m. on Fry Street to raise funds for Pabbo Secondary School. Raffle tickets for prizes and gift baskets will be sold in efforts to reach a target of $2,500.
