Celebrating UNT's past, present, future

It’s a week of celebration for UNT! Join the many events taking place during Wingspan Week April 11-17 to commemorate UNT’s 125th anniversary, including University Day April 15, which also is part of Great Global Citizens Month. Scheduled events include:

— UNT's Student Alumni Association will host "I Heart UNT Day" from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 11 in the Library Mall for the UNT community to show why they love UNT. A Scavify Mobile App competition will run through the week with opportunities to win prizes.

— The UNT Libraries’ launch of its book Independent, Original and Progressive: Celebrating 125 Years of UNT, featuring a live performance by Brave Combo, will be from 6 to 8 p.m. April 12 in the Forum of the Willis Library.

Union Fest, celebrating the Union’s 40th anniversary, will run from 8 a.m. to midnight April 14 at the new University Union.

— A historical Scrappy exhibit will be on display April 9-18 in the Art Gallery in the University Union. The Talons will be on site from 1 to 4 p.m. April 14 to answer questions about the history of our mascot and hand out free Scrappy ice cream.

— A flag parade at 11 a.m. April 15 will precede the University Day ceremony, where UNT President Neal Smatresk, Denton mayor and alumnus Chris Watts and new Mean Green football coach Seth Littrell will speak at 11:30 a.m. at the Library Mall. The ceremony will include the Student Government Association’s presentation of a new time capsule, which is scheduled to be opened on University Day 2041. Other activities include:

  • A free barbecue meal will be served to those who show their student and staff ID.
  • University Union dedication and ribbon cutting will follow the festivities at 1:30 p.m. April 15 at the west vestibule at the Library Mall. An artist reception will take place at 2 p.m. in the Union Ballroom featuring Murielle White, artist of the Campus Chat mural, and Norie Sato, artist of the Meditation Room, followed by an art tour at 2:30 p.m.

Wingspan Festival, featuring live music by headliner D and Chi and opening act UNT student Kelsey McLaughlin, will be from 5 to 7 p.m. April 15 at the Library Mall. Free angus burgers, vegetarian chili, fruit and cupcakes will be served.

Wingspan Gala is a green-tie formal event, honoring excellence in teaching, student success, notable alumni and donors. The event is at 6:30 p.m. April 16 at the University Union.
