Celebrate the USA and Conference USA

Fireworks over Fouts Field

The university will be closed Thursday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day.

  • Mean Green Athletics will celebrate its move into Conference USA at the annual fireworks show July 4 at Apogee Stadium. The Denton Kiwanis Club sponsors the event. Gates open at 6 p.m. and music by The Dirty Pesos and George Dunham and the Birddogs begins at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are accepted. Parking costs $5 per vehicle. Texas law establishes the overall number of state-funded holidays each year, and it allows higher education institutions flexibility to apply the allowed number of closure days to their operating calendars.

In developing the university’s holiday schedule, administration considers the academic mission and calendar and involves several university groups.

Holidays are approved by the UNT System Board of Regents at its August meeting.

"The Texas government code lists nine national holidays and eight state holidays that can be potentially allocated each year," said Indra Bhagat, Staff Senate employee relations committee chair.

"If a holiday on the list of these 17 potential days falls on a Saturday or Sunday, then state employees are not allocated that day as a paid holiday. Each institution is permitted to distribute the total number of days across the calendar as appropriate for its business functions. For example, although we receive a paid holiday from the state for Veterans Day, which will fall on a Monday in November, UNT redistributes this day to the Winter Holiday Break," according to Bhagat's report to Staff Senate.

The report also indicated "other state institutions may deem it more appropriate to be closed on Veterans Day, and open some days during our normal Winter Break. Since most higher education institutions are closed during the entire time between Christmas and New Year’s, we must borrow days from some of the other holidays throughout the year."

Employees who wish to do so may observe other optional state holidays by substituting vacation or compensatory leave, or by working on one or more of the scheduled university holidays with advance supervisory approval. These include:

  • Rosh Hashanah
  • Yom Kippur
  • Good Friday
  • Cesar Chavez Day
  • Other traditionally recognized religious or cultural holidays.
