Carolyn Kern, associate professor of counseling

Carolyn Kern

Carolyn Kern, associate professor of counseling in the University of North Texas College of Education, died Nov. 2.

Kern, right, joined the UNT faculty in 1991 after serving as a senior clinical counselor at the University Counseling Center at Oklahoma State University.

“She was a very optimistic person who found the good in anything and was really focused professionally on resilience,” said Jan Holden, chair of the Department of Counseling and Higher Education, who had known Kern for 22 years. “She exemplified social interest – the motivation to make a contribution to society. She was very energetic and enthusiastic and an incredible advocate for our students, program and our profession.”

Kern earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas, a master’s degree from Emporia State University and a doctoral degree from Oklahoma State University.

A celebration of her life will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 5 at Covenant Church, 2660 E. Trinity Mills in Carrollton, with visitation and viewing from 6 to 7 p.m. Interment will be Nov. 9 in Wamego City Cemetery in Wamego, Kan.

It was Dr. Kern’s wish that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to support future counseling students’ scholarships through the Carolyn & Doug Kern Scholarship Fund at the University of North Texas Foundation, 1155 Union Circle #311250, Denton, Texas 76203-5017.
