Career Center, intern program merge to help students put degrees to work

Dan Naegeli, Division of Student AffairsA merger between the Career Center and the Internship Offices - now simply the Career Center - will provide students the full cycle of career advising and assistance - student employment, internships and career needs - in one place.

The merger also will allow the staffs in both offices to work closer together and provide a unified message. Faculty and staff will benefit, too. They will have to contact only one place about career/internship-related needs for classroom presentations, programming and career advising.

The move fits into two of the UNT’s Four Bold Goals, said Dan Naegeli, left, who is new executive director of Career and Leadership Development.

Bold Goal 1 says UNT will provide the best undergraduate educational experience in Texas. Naegeli said the merger could lead to higher retention and graduation rates as students take advantage of the department’s services:

  • career assessments
  • alumni mentoring and job shadowing
  • internships and on and off campus student employment
  • preparation for professional job search through resume reviews, mock interviews and salary negotiation training
  • career advising, career fairs and on-campus interviews with potential employers

“It will connect each step of the career development process to the next one and help to clarify for students why they are in college and what they want to do with their UNT degree once they graduate, earlier on in the process,” Naegeli said.

The merger also fits Bold Goal 3 in helping UNT become a national leader among universities in student support, employee relations, operational effectiveness and service to constituencies. The move follows a recent reorganization in the Division of Student Affairs.

As executive director, Naegeli now will supervise the Career Center (which now also includes the Internship Office), Center for Leadership and Service and Student Money Management Center.

Kurt KrauseKurt Krause, right, former director of the Internships Office, will now serve as director of the Career Center, where he will manage the daily operations of the entire office. He will plan and implement career development and employment programs and services.

Krause said the Career Center and the Internships Office have been working closely together, and the merger will strengthen their relationship.

“We firmly believe that faculty and staff across the entire UNT campus play a huge role in helping students reach their career goals,” Krause said. “I am confident that this change will be seen as an opportunity for us to continue to partner with each other, as we’ve done in the past.”
