A Cappella Choir's concert features broad spectrum of styles

Jerry McCoy directs A Capella ChoirThe A Cappella Choir, the College of Music’s premier choral ensemble, returns to Dallas just prior to their performance at the Texas Music Educators Association conference, for what is becoming an annual tradition.

The 52-member choir, directed by Jerry McCoy, right, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 10 at St. Monica’s Cathedral, 9933 Midway Road, Dallas. Annual performances in Dallas solidify the ensemble’s relationship with the Dallas community, said McCoy. Performing at St. Monica’s also gives the choir a chance to work with choirmaster/organist and UNT alumnus Jeremy Wirth, he said.

The A Cappella Choir was one of only two collegiate choirs from the state of Texas invited to perform at the TMEA convention to sing in front of 26,000 attendees.

“Because we are singing for a broad base of teachers, the program includes a broad spectrum of styles of choral singing,” McCoy said. “We will sing in six languages and in more than eight clearly definable styles of choral composition, ranging from music by widely known composers such as Poulenc, Mendelssohn, Monteverdi and Nielsen; to recent works by Swiss composer Ivo Antognini and American composers Barlow Bradford and Daniel Elder; to music of South America and African American spirituals.”

The program includes:

  • Motets: Richte Mich, Gott – Psalm 43 (Felix Mendelssohn); I Am the Rose of Sharon (Ivo Antognini)
  • Missa: Spheres - Kyrie eleison (Ola Gjeillo); Benedictus (Carl Nielsen)
  • Chansons: A peine défigurée, La Blanche neige and Marie from Sept Chansons (Francis Poulenc)
  • Sfogava con le stele (Claudio Monteverdi)
  • Star Sonnet (Daniel Elder)
  • Keep Your Splendid, Silent Sun (Barlow Bradford)
  • When You Wish Upon A Star (arr. Nancy Wertsch)
  • The Yellow Rose of Texas (arr. Robert Shaw/Alice Parker)
  • Loch Lomond (arr. Jonathan Quick)
  • ¡Canta! (Guido Lopez Gavilan)
  •  Rock-A My Soul  (arr. Uzee Brown Jr.)

“The idea behind the programming is to exhibit the broad range of vocal colors and the command of varied styles of singing that the A Cappella Choir is known for internationally,” said McCoy.

Tickets for the concert are $10 for adults with children and students free.
