Campus to remain closed through Feb. 3

Feb. 2, 2011

Dear UNT community,

RawlinsI hope you continue to be safe and warm in your homes as we continue to experience frigid weather and icy conditions. Because the temperatures remain so low, roadway conditions are not improving. Additionally, most of us are experiencing forced and rotating power outages to reduce the overall load on our region’s power grid. The university is also is experiencing the outages. To ensure the continued safety of our university community and to conserve energy, I have decided UNT will continue to be closed tomorrow, Feb. 3.

Based on my own experience today, I recommend you don’t go to our campus unless it’s absolutely necessary. I drove there this morning, and experienced icy road conditions. On campus, I observed ice on our sidewalks and parking lots. We have limited access to our non-residential buildings, where we are keeping temperatures low to conserve energy.

There will be no classes held on campus and offices at UNT will continue to be closed on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011.

Campus closures do not impact online courses so WebCT classes and online testing will continue as scheduled.

I would like to thank the personnel, such as police, facilities, dining, housing and others, who made their way to work through this closure to provide essential services that care for our students and keep our campus safe. And, I want to thank all employees who have worked from home to ensure that important payroll, communication and other services are provided.

As you know, Feb. 1 was a payday. In anticipation of bad weather, the Payroll Office offered departments paychecks the afternoon of Jan. 31. If you do not receive your pay via direct deposit and have not received your paycheck, it will be available to you when our campus reopens. Supplemental checks should be available the afternoon of the day we resume normal operations. As usual, all paychecks should be picked up in your department.

Stay safe!

Sincerely,

V. Lane Rawlins

President
