Buy a piece of history for SECC

University UnionFaculty, staff and students are invited to buy a piece of history – a piece of the  University Union building that is being demolished this month – and  promote the State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC), which raises money for Denton County and state charities.

Beck Construction, which is in charge of the demolition of the union, which was built in 1963 and will be replaced by a new building scheduled for completion in 2015, has agreed to make bricks available for purchase.

“To me the University Union represents the core of campus--a place to meet with friends or colleagues, or to attend campus events,” said Rhonda Acker, UNT’s co-chair of the SECC. “I am sure that students, faculty and staff could share many stories of events that have taken place there. To purchase a commemorative brick would have two benefits: It would allow individuals to have something tangible for those memories, and all the proceeds from the sale of the brick go to the State Employee Charitable Campaign and will be used to benefit the Denton community.”

Cost is $15.

The campaign kicked off Oct. 1, and during the first week, employees at UNT and the UNT System’s IT shared services and business service center, pledged $42,467. Last year’s campaign raised $231,075.

Pledge forms are available from each department’s campaign coordinator and need to be returned to Student Accounting & Cashiering Services, in the Eagle Student Services Center, Room 105.

Several events around campus are also promoting the campaign. Among them are:

  • Oct. 8 – Frito chili pie, sponsored by Student Accounting and Cashiering Services, Eagle Student Services Center, first floor
  • Oct. 9 - Bake sale, noon, sponsored by the Student Financial Aid and Scholarships, Eagle Student Services Center, second floor.
  • Oct. 11 – Dollar Hot Dog Day, 11 a.m., sponsored by the Registrar’s office, Eagle Student Services Center, first floor
  • Oct. 15 – Bake sale, 10 a.m., sponsored by the Department of Mathematics, General Academic Building, Room 435.
  • All month – Candy Jar Guess, sponsored by the Department of Mathematics, General Academic Building, Room 435. $1 per guess.
