Build it and others will eat

CANstruction, University Union, 2010

(Editor’s note: CANstruction will be in the University Union, One O’Clock Lounge, Courtyard and Lyceum area. Rain and thunderstorms are forecast for Friday, March 9.  Entries will be built from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with judging at 1 p.m.)

Build it and others will eat, thanks to CANstruction, the fourth annual combination of community service and campus fun, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 9 on Library Mall. Above, CANstruction frenzy in 2010.

CANstruction allows faculty, staff and students to compete for bragging rights and to support the Denton Community Food Center. Construction materials - non-perishable, canned or packaged food - may be donated at campus locations, below.

CANstruction teams will have three hours   to build a self-supporting structure within an 8-foot-by-10-foot area. After construction is complete, judges select winners based on   the number of cans in the structure,  size and creativity. Structures must  represent UNT and addresses hunger. Bonus points will be given to teams whose members are wearing green.

Sculptures will be dismantled and donated to the Denton Community Food Center. The  center is an independent, non-profit organization staffed by volunteers. It distributes more than 250,000 pounds of food to more than 5,500 families a year. Last year during the CANstruction event, more than 6,500 pounds of food was collected at UNT. This year, the goal is 7,000.

Donation boxes will be available at the following locations through March 8:

  • All residence halls
  • Several offices in the University Union, including Room 320S, Student Government Association office
  • Terrill Hall, Room 343
  • Chilton Hall, Room 289, College of Public Affairs and Community Service, Dean’s Office
  • Locations in Discovery Park

The Center for Leadership and Service is sponsoring CANstruction. The center, part of the Division of Student Affairs, coordinates participation in community service projects such as The Big Event, Cancer Awareness Ambassadors, blood drives, recycling events, Alternative Spring Break, other volunteer opportunities and leadership training.

Center activities support UNT’s strategic goals, particularly the university’s intent to be engaged with North Texas communities and to build community partnerships.

CANstruction will move to the University Union, in the event of inclement weather.
