The British are coming ... to square off against debate team

UNT students Brett Farmer and Alyssa Lucas-Bolin, both master’s students in communication studies and graduate assistants for UNT Debate, will take opposing positions against two members of the British National Debate Team during a free public exhibition at 6 p.m. Oct. 11 in the Eagle Student Services Center, Room 255.

Their topic is: Should the House cap political party spending at elections.

The British National Debate Team members are Richard Robinson, a recent graduate from Manchester University and competitor in the prestigious Cambridge Inter Varsity tournament, and Ben Jasper, a graduate from Oxford University and former Head of Coaching at the Oxford Union. They were selected to tour the U.S. and debate at U.S. universities by the English-Speaking Union, an international education charity that promotes global understanding through the shared use of English language through debate, public speaking and student exchange programs.

The union, which was founded in 1918, created the annual tour of debaters in 1922. The tour is sponsored by the Committee on International Discussion and Debate, which is part of the U.S. National Communication Association, a nonprofit, scholarly society.
