Bicycle repair stations available at University Union entrances

UNT’s biking community has another thing to be happy about. Two bike repair stations have been installed near the entrances of the University Union. The stations are equipped with air pumps, tire gauges and bunches of Park brand tools dangling from cords, including screwdrivers and wrenches.

Bicycle enthusiast and associate professor of Vocal Studies Jennifer Lane hasn’t used the repair stations yet, but she knows that they’ll come in handy. Her colleague, John Murphy, agrees.

“I was glad to see that they were installed,” said Murphy, chair of the Division of Jazz Studies in the College of Music. “It’s good to know that I could use the repair rack to inflate a tire or adjust my brakes.”

Like many on UNT’s campus, Murphy usually makes his daily commute on bike – a round trip of almost 10 miles. Murphy also serves on the Denton’s Traffic Safety Commission.

“Encouraging alternatives means of transportation is an important part of UNT’s sustainability mission,” he said. “I hope to see lots of bicyclists using the repair stations. Maybe that would be a good spot to send a message about traffic safety. Bicyclists need to follow the rules of the road just as other vehicles do.”
