Benefits enrollment ends July 24

The Employees Retirement System (ERS) annual enrollment period continues through Friday, July 24. ERS has mailed a Personal Benefits Statement to each enrollee showing current insurance benefits enrollment. The statement also includes information about retirement contributions.

It is important that you carefully read the information and review your benefits choices for insurance benefits. Benefits-eligible employees are:

  • Part time employees who work 20-29 hours per week (50 to 74 percent of FTE)
  • Full time employees who work 30 or more hours per week (75 percent of FTE)

All changes made during this time will be effective Sept. 1. If no changes are needed, you will default to your current benefits on Sept. 1.

To participate in annual enrollment, login to your account through ERS at or contact ERS directly at 877-275-4377.

Retirement Contributions

Remember that ERS manages insurance benefits. TRS administers retirement benefits. (Some employees may have Optional Retirement Programs.)

The communication that was included in the ERS mailer for annual enrollment regarding the percentage increase for ERS retirement and the salary increase does not apply to any UNT System institutions. This only applies to state agencies that have ERS as benefit administrator and ERS as their state retirement plan.

Since all UNT institutions are public higher education institutions, the ERS retirement does not apply. We are a teaching institution, therefore Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) is our state retirement plan.

Effective Sept. 1, the TRS contribution will increase for the employee from 6.7 percent to 7.2 percent of their monthly salary, however the state (UNT) contribution will remain the same at 6.8 percent of the employee’s monthly salary.  There will not be a salary increase in conjunction with the employees’ contribution increase for TRS.

Employees who are enrolled in Optional Retirement Program (ORP) will not have a change to their contribution percentages. They will remain at 6.65 percent for employees and 6.6 percent for the state (UNT) contribution for non-grandfathered employees. Grandfathered employees will receive the same 8.5 percent they have been receiving all along for the state contribution.
