Benavides, Hodges appointed to public administration group roles

Abraham David Benavides, Department of Public AdministrationValerie Hodges, policy specialistAbraham David Benavides, right, associate professor and assistant chair of the Department of Public Administration, has been elected District IV representative for the National Council of the American Society for Public Administration. He will serve a three-year term.

Benavides has appointed Valerie Hodges, near right, UNT Policy Specialist, to serve as vice president of the North Texas chapter of the society.

Benavides has been president of the North Texas Chapter of the society since 2003.

During his tenure as president, Benavides’ efforts strengthened and grew the organization in North Texas. Among his significant achievements are:

  • Re-founded the chapter in 2003, including obtaining approval of the chapter’s current constitution.
  • Reinstituted the Public Administrator of the Year Award. A number of prominent individuals in the North Texas area are recipients.
  • Arranged partnerships with UNT, the University of Texas at Dallas and UT Arlington to hold chapter meetings on their campuses.
  • Organized monthly meetings.
  • Hosted the national conference in Dallas in 2008.

Benavides also appointed Ted Benavides as interm president of the North Texas chapter. Ted Benavides, executive-in-residence and senior lecturer at the University of Texas at Dallas, is former Dallas city manager.

The American Society for Public Administrators is a national society representing all forums in the public service arena. Comprised of a diverse membership of approximately 9,000 government and nonprofit administrators, scholars, educators and students, ASPA is the largest and most prominent professional association in public administration.
