Award winners reveal range of academic excellence

Undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students have brought home several awards and recognitions ranging from film talent to dissertation excellence.

Some of the students that earned these awards and achievements include:

  • Alyssa Narum is a 2013-14 Presser Scholar and recipient of $4,800 Presser Scholarship. She was nominated by College of Music faculty and was recognized for her academic excellence and talents as a mezzo-soprano.
  • Documentary film production graduate student Sara Masetti and her film “Undocumented Dreams” have been chosen to premiere at the New Filmmakers Series in New York City.
  • Katherine Lester, undergraduate specializing in mental-health geography, is a Truman Scholarship Finalist. Her research mentor is Joseph Oppong, associate dean of Toulouse Graduate School. 
  • Iran Roman of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Researchers Program has earned a summer research placement to the institute's Exceptional Research Opportunities Program. Program director Lee Hughes and UNT faculty Pamela Padilla, associate professor of biology, and Amanda Wright, assistant professor of biology, recommended Roman for the program.
  • College of Education doctoral student Mandy Stewart has had her dissertation, “Social Networking, Workplace, and Entertainment Literacies: The Out-of-School Literate Lives of Newcomer Latina/o Adolescents” chosen as a finalist for this year's PDK Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award.
  • Graduate student Clare Carrasco has won a German Academic Exchange Service Intensive Language Course Grant to advance her dissertation about musical expressionism in the years following World War I.
