Rancher Maurine Pearson, who died in 2012, made a trust distribution of more than $88,000 to support biological sciences. She developed a friendship with Provost Warren Burggren after she donated emu eggs to be used in research. A conference room will be named in her honor.

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board voted Jan. 24 to approve the expansion and renovation of UNT’s University Union. Construction is expected to begin in June 2013 with completion planned for June 2015.

"The Revisionaries," a documentary that follows members of the Texas Board of Education as they review science and social studies standards in public schools, will air nationally on PBS affiliates. The film was created by alumnus Scott Thurman and will be broadcast In the Dallas-Fort Worth area at 10 p.m. Jan. 29 on KERA-TV.

The Arbor Day Foundation has recognized the University of North Texas as a 2012 Tree Campus USA University for its dedication to campus forestry management and environmental stewardship. This marks the fifth consecutive year that UNT has earned the designation.

Luis Rocha, a freshman enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences, died Jan. 18. He was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps active reserves and previously served in Afghanistan and Japan. Services will be Jan. 30.
