Annual open enrollment continues through Aug. 5

Benefits enrollment for UNT employees eligible for the Employees Retirement System of Texas plans will be from Monday, July 11 to Sunday, Aug. 5. Benefits may be selected for the 2011-12 plan year, which is from Sept. 1, 2011 to Aug. 31, 2012.

Benefits include the addition of dependents to health insurance, dental insurance, life insurance, disability insurance and the TexFlex flexible spending account, which allows pre-tax payroll deductions to be used for certain health care expenses.

Plan changes for 2011-12 include provisions of the federal Affordable Care Act such as cost of preventive care and an extended dependent age limit, plus a tobacco user fee and the addition of the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Rates will increase for some Health Select of Texas coverage.

Personal Enrollment Statements, which provide current benefit elections and dependent and beneficiary information, were mailed from the Employees Retirement System of Texas (ERS) to benefits-eligible employees’ home addresses. The mailings began about July 1. If you did not receive a statement, contact ERS.

If you don’t need to make changes to your benefits, then it is not necessary for you to attend a webcast, complete a form or call ERS. Your current benefit elections will continue in the next plan year.

For more information or assistance with the benefit process, ERS will offer webcasts accessible from your personal computer and representatives, below, of the UNT System Business Service Center will be available in Marquis Hall, Room 105. From left, Susan Mallory, Karyn Boothman and Lisa Garner.

 Other plan changes are:

  • Coverage for dependent children can continue to age 26, a provision of the Affordable Care Act.
  • There are lower costs for preventive care. Some provisions of the Affordable Care Act, effective Sept. 1, may affect the cost of annual physicals, health screenings, mammograms, colonoscopies and immunizations.
  • Tobacco User Fee begins Jan. 1, 2012. Under the new state budget, tobacco users will pay more for health insurance coverage. Benefits eligible tobacco users or dependents who use tobacco will pay a Tobacco User Fee of $30 per person up to a maximum of $90 more per month. A tobacco user is a person who uses any form of tobacco, including cigarette, pipe, cigar or smokeless tobacco. Use of nicotine chewing gum, patches or electronic cigarettes is not considered tobacco use.
  • The State Kids Insurance Program ends Aug. 31. Eligible employees can now apply for the federal Children’s Health Insurance Program, or CHIP.
