Insurance, benefits enrollment July 14-27

Annual Enrollment for employee insurance plans under the Employees Retirement System of Texas (ERS) begins July 14 and ends July 27.

During this two-week period, benefit changes may be made for Plan Year 2015, which begins Sept. 1, 2014. No changes may be made after July 27, except for qualifying life events such as birth of a child, death, marriage, divorce.

Human Resources Benefits Coordinators will be available to assist faculty and staff at UNT:

  • July 14 - 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Marquis Hall, Room 150
  • July 17 -  9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Marquis Hall, Room 150
  • July 22 - noon to 5 p.m. , Marquis Hall, Room 150
  • July 24 - 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Marquis Hall, Room 150

To make changes, employees can sign-in to their online ERS account at If no changes are needed, enrolled employees need to do nothing.

Employees can make the following changes during Annual Enrollment:

  • Enroll in HealthSelect health insurance
  • Select the Opt-Out Credit option with comparable health coverage.
  • Enroll or make changes to a dental plan.
  • Enroll in Voluntary Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance.
  • Stop employee and/or dependent coverage.
  • Add or apply for dependent coverage.
  • Apply for Short-term Disability and Long-term Disability, Dependent Term Life Insurance, or Optional Term Life Insurance. Evidence of insurability (EOI), also known as proof of good health, is required for these benefits.
  • Stop, enroll or make changes to TexFlex health and day care savings program.

TexFlex Account Updates

Effective Sept. 1, 2015. TexFlex health care account enrollees can carry over a maximum of $500 from the previous year’s (2014-15) TexFlex health care funds into the new plan year. There will no longer be a grace period for using TexFlex health care funds. This requires careful calculation of eligible health care expenses for 2014-15 (2015 plan year.) There are no refunds if you spend less than the amount deducted.

Note that if you currently are enrolled in TexFlex, you will be automatically re-enrolled for the same annual contribution for health care account and/or day care account, unless you change the contribution amount during Annual Enrollment, July 14-27.

New dental option

The State of Texas Dental Discount Plan has been added to the Group Benefits Plan for Plan Year 2015.  This plan will be managed by Careington International Corporation.

The dental discount plan is not insurance, but is a program that discounts dental services at the provider’s office. Enrollees and their dependents cannot be simultaneously enrolled in the dental discount program and a dental insurance plan.

Tobacco Certification

Enrollees who have not previously certified their tobacco status for themselves or their dependents must certify their status as a tobacco user or non-user during Annual Enrollment. All participants who reached age 18 since Aug. 31, 2013 or who will reach age 18 before Sept. 1, 2014 are required to certify.

Certification is available online or at 866-399-6908. It’s not necessary to certify if there has been no change in enrollee or dependent tobacco use.

Dependent Eligibility Audit

ERS has contracted with Aon Hewitt to verify every dependent’s eligibility to participate in ERS, also referred to as the Group Benefit Plan. Employees who have covered dependents who have not been verified in a prior audit will be asked to provide documentation that those dependents are eligible for coverage.

If the participants do not respond or do not send the required documents, all of their unverified dependents will lose all Group Benefit Plan insurance, including health, dental and dependent term life. Aon Hewitt will contact enrollees to complete the audit.

The audit will be two parts:

  • The first part includes dependents currently enrolled in health coverage added since the previous audit in 2011.
  • The second part will be for new dependents as they are added to health coverage. This ongoing verification is scheduled to begin in July 2014.
  •  Contact Aon Hewitt at 800-987-6605 from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, if you have questions about the audit.

Call 1-855-878-7650 or email to speak to a Human Resources Benefits Coordinator. You can also contact an ERS representative at 877-275-4377.
